Do carbs after 6pm really make you gain weight?

Hi Reader,

Let’s start with one of the most common things I hear in my office:

“I stopped eating carbs after 6pm, so I don’t gain weight.”

If you’ve heard this one, you’re not alone. It’s everywhere, and it’s easy to see why. It’s simple, it sounds strict, and it gives you a rule to follow.

The myth: Your body turns carbohydrates eaten in the evening straight into fat.

The fact: Your body doesn’t have a carb curfew. Weight change over time comes mostly from your overall eating pattern: how much you eat, what you eat, and how you move across weeks and months, not from the time on the clock when a food crosses your plate.

Why the myth sticks around: Evening is when many people snack on chips, ice cream, or cereal straight from the box while tired or stressed. The problem there isn’t the carbs. It’s mindless eating after a long day. Cutting “carbs after 6” can work for some people only because it makes them eat less overall.

What actually matters:

  • Balance at dinner. Pair carbs with protein, fiber, and healthy fat so you feel satisfied and steady.
  • Enough during the day. Skipping meals or under-eating until evening often leads to overeating at night.
  • Hunger cues. Eat until you’re comfortably full, not stuffed and not restricted.

Your one thing this week:
Build your dinner plate this way for three nights: ½ plate vegetables (think of color), ¼ plate protein, ¼ plate carbs (rice, potatoes, pasta, tortillas, or bread), plus a little healthy fat (avocados, olives, nuts, seeds). Notice how you feel afterward, and whether you still crave a snack later.

That’s it. No curfew required.
